Want to stay connected at sea? Introducing ZOLEO… a satellite communication device and a solution to safe sailing.

For sailors, the allure of the ocean is undeniable. The freedom of harnessing the wind and navigating vast distances is unique to this pursuit. However, venturing offshore comes with inherent risks. Unpredictable weather, equipment failures, and unforeseen emergencies can quickly turn the course of a peaceful voyage. Reliable communication is paramount in such scenarios, and that’s where ZOLEO steps in as a trusted navigation companion.

ZOLEO is a satellite communication device that transcends the limitations of traditional marine radios or mobile networks that often fall short in remote areas. Leveraging Iridium’s robust satellite network, ZOLEO ensures uninterrupted global coverage.

Distress Signalling: A Beacon of Hope in Emergencies

One of ZOLEO’s most critical features is its ability to send distress signals. ZOLEO includes a robust SOS alerting system monitored 24/7 by Global Rescue. In an emergency, pressing the SOS button transmits your alert and GPS location for timely assistance, ensuring swift response and coordinated rescue efforts on land and when sailing the seas.

Weather Updates for Informed Navigation

The ever-changing nature of marine weather demands real-time information for safe navigation. ZOLEO allows sailors to receive detailed weather reports, keeping them informed of approaching storms, shifting wind patterns, and potential hazards. This advanced weather forecasting capability empowers skippers to make informed decisions about route planning, allowing them to avoid adverse conditions and navigate towards calmer waters.

Two-Way Messaging: A Bridge Between Sailor and Shore

ZOLEO goes beyond one-way distress signalling by facilitating two-way text messaging. This feature enables sailors to communicate with onshore support teams, fellow mariners, Coast Guard services, or loved ones at home. This two-way communication channel provides peace of mind, allowing crews to send and receive non-emergency messages, relay updates on their progress, or request assistance if needed through app-to-app messaging or the dedicated SMS number and email address. ZOLEO connects to smartphones through Bluetooth and the free app delivers a familiar text messaging interface, requiring no training, while the device’s compact, lightweight design, coupled with its durability and long battery life, makes it an ideal companion for marine users.

Tracking Your Journey: Sharing the Adventure and Enhancing Safety

For solo sailors or those venturing on extended voyages, ZOLEO’s tracking capabilities offer an extra layer of security. With the Location Share+ feature enabled, the device transmits a vessel’s GPS location at regular intervals, allowing onshore contacts to monitor route progress in real-time. This tracking data provides peace of mind for those onshore and can be crucial in emergencies, enabling rescuers to pinpoint the vessel’s location quickly. Additionally, ZOLEO Track allows sailors to share their journey on a web map with friends and family, making them part of their journey even from a distance, while ensuring an uninterrupted safety system.

Affordable Service Plans

The device’s waterproof and rugged design easily adapts to the complex marine environment, withstanding sun, wind, rain, and waves alike. ZOLEO offers tailored solutions for different sailing needs, from cruising sailors to offshore racers or solo sailors. To operate over the Iridium satellite network, ZOLEO requires an active airtime subscription, which includes 24/7 emergency monitoring from Global Rescue. Various plans are available to suit different needs and budgets.

ZOLEO’s innovative satellite technology equips sailors with the tools they need to navigate the seas with greater confidence. From distress signalling and weather forecasting to two-way messaging and tracking, ZOLEO offers a comprehensive communication solution that enhances safety, fosters connection, and empowers sailors to fully embrace exploration knowing they have a reliable companion to count on.

50 Years and Beyond

2024 stands as a significant chapter for Sunsail—a milestone marking our 50th anniversary. Yet, this isn’t merely a celebration of our past; it’s a resounding promise for the future. Sunsail remains steadfast in our commitment to charting new horizons, ensuring the next 50 years and beyond are filled with unparalleled sailing adventures that exceed every expectation.

In 1974, Sunsail pioneered revolutionary innovations in the sailing industry, specifically with the creation of the legendary flotilla holiday.

Sunsail continues to craft and expand new flotilla routes tailored to customer preferences, as exemplified by the recently unveiled Elafiti flotilla in Dubrovnik. This week-long journey along the breathtaking Dalmatian Coast ensures access to secluded island beaches and charming fishing villages, offering tranquil, glistening waters and opportunities for adventure with newfound friends. The itinerary features shorter hops between islands, making it an ideal route, particularly well-suited for families.

Sunsail’s flotillas add an extra layer of support to your sailing adventure. In a flotilla, you will join a group of like-minded sailors led by an experienced lead crew, providing a social and collaborative environment. This option is ideal for those seeking a more relaxed approach to sailing, as the lead crew assists with navigation, organises social events, and ensures a stress-free experience. For those who may be newer to sailing or simply enjoy the added support and company, a Sunsail flotilla offers the perfect blend of independence and community, enhancing the overall enjoyment of your sailing holiday.

Alternatively, if you prefer to chart your own course at your own pace, you might prefer a bareboat charter in one of Sunsails 20+ worldwide destinations, spanning the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and South Pacific. Each destination boasts its own unique charm and cultural treasures. For those seeking complete relaxation without having to think about navigation, you can opt to hire a professional and friendly skipper for your state-of-the-art private yacht. The skipper brings an abundance of knowledge about your chosen destination, enhancing your journey.

The Allures 51.9 has been designed to ensure you can undertake blue water voyages in total comfort and safety…

Most sailors in their idle moments have sketched out their dream boat and generally it remains just that – a sketch. Yet, as T E Lawrence once famously wrote, there are dreamers of the night and dreamers of the day.

Stephan Constance and Xavier Desmaret, who founded the Allures shipyard back in 2003, fall into the latter category. They wanted to build the boat of their dreams and they realised their ambition.

20 years later, the two friends’ dream is well and truly alive. The Allures brand of ‘go anywhere’ blue water cruisers that they created has flourished and expanded beyond recognition.

In the meantime, the pair have expanded and diversified the business and are now at the head of the Grand Large Yachting group, which includes Allures Yachting, Outremer, Garcia Yachts, Gunboat, RM Yachts and ORC.

Photo: Jérôme Houyvet

Yet Allures was their first love; the yachts are designed for ocean cruising and includes three models: 40.9, 45.9 and 51.9, all of which feature rugged aluminium hulls, twin rudders, centreboard and seaworthy lines meaning that they are just as at home in the high latitudes or the tropics. These are yachts you can trust.

The 51.9 is their latest model, and flagship of the fleet. Like her predecessors, she is designed by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design and features Allures’ trademark mixed construction with an aluminium hull and composite deck.

Years of perfecting this method of construction has made Allures the experts in this method of construction and ensures a strong and versatile yacht; the aluminium hull ensures toughness, while the composite deck makes for better weight distribution and plays a key role in providing the cabin with thermal insulation and soundproofing.

Photo: JM Liot

A safe, comfortable and secure cockpit

The concept of the Allures brand is very simple; this has to be a boat that is tough enough to be trusted in the harshest of conditions and be capable of taking its crew everywhere in complete safety and maximum comfort.

Thus, on the 51.9, the cockpit area is set forward and is well protected as the sides, with twin helm stations, whose binnacles are equipped with handrails to facilitate movement, and the winches easily to hand of the helm which can take care of all sail handling even when short handed.

The stern remains a free zone, with storage lockers, and overhangs the transom, which opens out to provide a bathing platform with a tender garage tucked behind.

Photo: Jérôme Houyvet

The front of the cockpit, under the protection of a solid bimini with opening windscreen, is occupied by benches to either side and a pair of tables which leave a central passage through to the companionway when folded out.

Access to the foredeck and mast step, for example for reefing, is made extra secure due to the solid guardrails around the boat and the handrails on the deckhouse.

The deckhouse and davits are fitted with solar panels, as energy production is an essential element for autonomy and long crossings.

Photo: JM Liot

Interior comfort

Yet the exterior is only half the beauty of the Allures 51.9. Descend down below via the steps, curved for ergonomic heeling, and you’re in the saloon.

The floor of the saloon is set at such a height that it provides a good view of the outside, through the deckhouse and hull portholes, with numerous openings making this space light and bright.

The zones of the interior are well defined according to their use. On the starboard side, a table accommodates five people with ease.

Opposite, the chart table is located between the navigator’s comfortable swivel chair, with its back to the road, and a small sofa that allows a crew member to consult with the navigator.

Photo: JM Liot

Forward of this, still on the port side, the galley is ergonomically designed in a U-shape, making it comfortable and safe at sea, whatever the weather or direction of heel.

The galley is generously equipped with a sink, cooker, microwave oven, fridge and freezer, dishwasher and a large worktop with ledges and fiddles.

Forward is a beautiful guest cabin with double bed and plenty of natural light with deck and hull portholes. Next to it is a smaller cabin with two bunk beds.

Photo: JM Liot

At the rear, the owner’s cabin takes up the entire width of the boat with a double bed in a central island, a sofa, storage and hanging space. The bathroom is pleasant with a washbasin, toilet and shower cubicle.

In the passageway leading to this cabin, there is plenty of storage space and a long work surface that can be transformed into a workshop if required. The decoration plays on a certain simplicity without ever being spartan.

Careful finishing, refined indirect lighting and interesting contrasts of colours and materials make this a real soothing cocoon when the conditions are tough outside.

Photo: Jérôme Houyvet

A yacht you can trust

Blend all of these design features together and you have a supremely comfortable yacht that you can truly trust. This is a boat that is just as at home running before the trade winds of the Atlantic or Pacific as it is to threading the ice of the North West Passage or drying out in a tidal Creek in the West Country.

The boat can easily be handled by a cruising couple and features a plethora of clever touches to ensure sail handling is a breeze. All that and at the end of your watch you can retreat below to a space that provides true comfort and a touch of class.

Dream Yacht’s ‘Dream Guarantee’ offers a new yacht ownership program, with 10% Income and an additional 1% for Lagoon catamarans.

The Dream Guarantee

Have you considered buying a yacht through a charter management program? You’ve probably noticed “guaranteed income” programs that offer a percentage of the yacht’s value as an annual income. Well, Dream Yacht’s ‘Dream Guarantee’ Ownership Program does exactly that and more.

Here’s a new 2024 proven program from Dream Yacht that’s been hugely popular, letting you benefit from an impressive 10% annual income for up to 3.5 years, with an extra 1% income on Lagoon catamarans.

About Dream Yacht’s New Ownership Program

Dreaming of sailing on yachts around the world? This guaranteed income yacht charter management program will enable you to live this dream while generating an income to help offset the purchase price. This Ownership Program’s 10% rate is based on the full retail value of your yacht for the 36 to 42 months of the program, allowing you to benefit from a higher return in the initial years of the program and help offset the cost of current interest rates.

Additional 1% for Lagoon Catamarans

As a sister company of Lagoon under Group Beneteau – and as a celebration of their 40 successful years as a top luxury catamaran brand – Dream Yacht is now additionally able to offer an exclusive extension of 1% annual income, for select Lagoon catamaran models.

What does this mean then? With Dream Yachts you can now own a Lagoon model, including the L40, L42 or L46, all with deliveries in 2024, and place your yacht in the Dream Guarantee Ownership Program with the additional 1% income for the duration of your program. And… importantly, you’ll still benefit from all of the standard program features, like all costs included, and up to 12 weeks of sailing from any Dream Yacht destination.

How Does the Dream Guarantee Program Work?

Once you have selected a yacht configured for charter from premium brands like Pajot, Lagoon, Beneteau, Bali, Fountaine and more, the yacht is placed in the program for charters. This program offers for all aspects of your yacht’s operations, marketing, maintenance, and finances to be managed by Dream Yachts at no cost to you, including insurance, berthing, and maintenance costs. As if this wasn’t enough, alongside this, you’ll receive a monthly guaranteed payment for the duration of the program.

Opening up endless sailing opportunities oceanwide, this program entitles you to sail yachts around the world, with over 40 bases and a wider range of yacht models than anyone else, for up to 12 weeks per year.

This program also offers the flexibility you need. At the end of the 36-42 month program, you can choose to continue keeping your yacht within the Dream Yacht charter fleet, with an adjusted income on your yacht’s current value, or you may take advantage of Dream Yacht’s flexibility and transition your yacht into the Dream Performance program.

Who is the Dream Guarantee Program for?

Unlike you’d assume, the Dream Guarantee program is not exclusive to a select few. The innovation and evolution of their programs to make ownership more accessible, means that the privilege of yacht ownership moves from being a dream to a reality.

There are a few different groups of people for which this program is well suited.

The Soon to Retire

Planning to retire in 3-5 years? This new program allows you to sail up to 12 times a year while finishing your 9-5 career, with the knowledge that your boat is waiting for you when you’re ready to fully set sail. This program also offers you confidence in knowing your yacht is taken care of while earning 10% income annually for up to 3.5 years, with no surprise costs.

The Charter Regular

Do you charter annually, or multiple times per year, across the world? The benefits of purchasing the yacht of your choice with the Dream Guarantee program are clear and straightforward for the Charter Regular.

The First-time Yacht Owner

The ease and security of knowing that berthing, maintenance, logistics and cleaning are taken care of, is the ideal setup for a first-time owner. Just turn up and set sail.

The Yacht Sharing Savvy

A savvy way to use the Dream Guarantee program is to gather a few friends together and split the cost of the yacht purchase. By sharing the yacht ownership you only pay a fraction of the cost, still enjoy all the benefits of the program and get to sail anywhere in the world. So, say you split the cost with 2 other couples, you could expect 4 weeks of charter time per year, or more if you choose to sail all together, anywhere in the world!

Sail the World with the New Dream Guarantee

Ready to get started with the Dream Guarantee Ownership Program? Dream Yacht’s expert yacht consultants can discuss your options with you and guide you through the process from start to finish, so that you are confident the setup is right for you.

Batfish V is well constructed, Italian designed and built performance cruiser/racer from Studio Vallicelli and Comar Yachts. The brokers say this design is rare to the UK market, and ideally suited for club/offshore racing, or family cruising. Batfish V also has a Raymarine touchscreen chart plotter from 2018,  Ullman Sails mainsail and matching roller furling genoa, both from 2019, and her rig was removed and fully inspected in in the same year.

The RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show takes place at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre over the weekend of the 24 – 25 February.

Featuring dinghy sailing, windsurfing, wingsurfing and foiling as well as paddleboarding, the ever-popular Show brings together participants, clubs, training centres, Class Associations, equipment manufacturers and retailers from right across the small boat sailing and boardsports community, all sharing their water-based passions and helping more people spend more time afloat.

The 2024 Show returns to Farnborough for the third time and this year has even more in store with over 170 exhibitors and an array of expert talks and inspirational stories to help you kick-start your season in style.

From new boats, boards and tech, to holidays, must-have clothing and accessories, you’ll find all the latest cutting edge kit and specialist advice from the biggest marine brands and industry experts.

And with interactive displays and demos, VR experiences, simulators, a model boat pool and the much-loved Treasure Hunt, you’ll find something to keep even the youngest members of the family entertained.

RYA Director of Sport Development Rob Clark said: “The RYA organises this Show to bring together the small boat sailing and watersports community and there’s really nothing else like it. Last year the hall was just alive with visitors from all over the UK and well beyond, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back through the doors this February.”

“There are so many ways to enjoy time on the water, and watersports participation has seen a huge boost in recent years as individuals and families alike have valued time outdoors and appreciated the physical and social benefits that boating in all its forms can bring,” Rob continued.

“So, whether you’re looking to discover a new water-based hobby, be inspired by a challenge or progress to the next level in your watersports journey, you’ll find everything you need at the Show.

“We’re grateful for the support of our event and media partners Sebago, ePropulsion, Rockley Watersports, Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting, YachtsandYachting.com, Windsurf and SUPBoarder and look forward to seeing everyone at this fantastic season starter.”

We preview the Show over the next few pages, with a look at some of the talks, exhibitors and other features you can look forward to.

So whether you’re taking your first tentative tacks, dreaming of adventures afloat or are looking to hone your high performance skills, the Show can provide all the advice you need with its line-up of expert talks across its three stages – Main Stage, Knowledge Zone and Watersports Stage.

The hosts this year include Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Eilidh McIntyre, who is perfectly placed to shine a spotlight on the journey from grassroots to glory, share behind the scenes stories and help inspire you in your own watersports ambitions.

“It’s going to be an incredible year for the sport and this RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show is the one to come to,” Eilidh enthused.

“Whether you’re an experienced sailor, you’ve been a lifelong sailor, or you’re brand new to watersports, the show is the perfect place. You’ll meet loads of incredible people as well as potentially lifelong friends. We cannot wait to see you there!”

The full schedule of talks can be found at dinghyshow.org.uk but we provide a snapshot of what to look out for below.

Discover

Fasten your life jacket and get ready for an epic and entertaining tale of human resilience, courage and endurance from Neil Peters – alter ego Stick Daring – who attempted to circumnavigate the unpredictable waters of Britain anti-clockwise aboard his £50 Laser dinghy. Through vivid narratives, captivating images, and a love of the open sea, you can relive the journey and celebrate the spirit of adventure that lies beyond the horizon (2.15pm both days).

Show regular and dinghy cruising royalty Roger Barnes will be sharing his tales of cruising the coast in a small boat (11.45am both days), while if watersports are your thing then RYA Instructor Trainer and Pathway Coach James Hardy will be exploring winging, from foil tuning tips to nailing those manoeuvres. He’s joined by wing instructor Mia Adcock and teenage UK Wingfoil Slalom National Champion Hugo Dobrijevic (11.00am and 3.30pm both days)

Windsurfing legend Peter Hart will also be on hand once again with his masterclass and will clear up any confusion around kit selections (2.00pm both days).

Inspire

With two of the sport’s biggest global events – the Paris Olympic Games and the America’s Cup – just around the corner, let 2024 be the year that inspires you further in your own boating journey.

Fancy a future in foiling? World class coach Penny Clark (Saturday only) and Hattie Rogers, James Crossley and Noah Fitzgerald of Athena Pathway be shining a spotlight on their mission to build a long-term, equitable pathway in high performance foiling sailing. Led by double Olympic gold medallist Hannah Mills OBE, the British team is building towards the Youth and inaugural Puig Women’s America’s Cup this autumn in Barcelona.  The ‘Future foiling stars’ talk is at 12.30pm both days.

In ‘Going for Gold’ (3.00pm both days) RYA Performance Director Mark Robinson MBE and 49er crew Fynn Sterritt (Saturday only), who’s set to make his Olympic debut on the waters of Marseille this summer, will be talking Games preparations and the journey to get the Olympic startline. Fynn and his 49er partner James Peters were among the first athletes to be selected for Team GB for the Paris Games – an ambition Fynn first set his heart on at a young age.

“[Olympic selection] is something I’ve been dreaming about since I was 12 years old. It’s pretty cool and you definitely have to stop and catch yourself, and appreciate the moment,” he reflected.

“I was up at home in the highlands of Scotland, reminiscing with friends and one of them got a yearbook out. It asked the question ‘Where will you be in four years?’ and I said I will be at the Olympics, and that was 16 years ago.

“Things don’t happen quite as fast as you hope or certainly haven’t for me and I’ve been told that if we were to medal, I would be the oldest 49er crew to medal.

“Everyone gets to these things at different points. I would have loved to have gotten there a little bit earlier, but likewise, many people don’t make it.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling to pursue the dream and to pursue it all the way.”

The Going for Gold talk will also be dissecting what it takes to make it as a top level crew with members of the British Sailing Squad’s Crew4Gold Talent ID scheme, launched last year to fast-track young female athletes into the fast-paced world of 49erFX crewing.

Progress

Whatever your means of getting afloat, the RYA Dinghy & Watersport Show’s experts will be on hand with all the advice and practical tips you need to help you improve.

The initial steps towards the collaboration were formed by the GlobeSailor team, who were keen to establish an internal RSE group, to make strides towards becoming more environmentally responsible both in and out of the workplace.

GlobeSailor have already established various nautical partnerships to offer their customers value-added-services with their bookings, but with more team members and more clients becoming environmentally aware, now is the time to form a partnership that will address everyone’s interest and concerns for the preservation for the protection of the environment.

CEO of GlobeSailor, Oliver Albahary, said of the partnership: “We’re delighted to be working with the non-profit association Surfrider Foundation Europe to make an ongoing commitment to the protection and preservation of the ocean. We are always keen to collaborate with like- minded partners and Surfrider Foundation Europe was of particular interest to us because of their solution-orientated stance about environmental protection and their international reach which touches our clients across the globe.”

GlobeSailor has been a market leader in the yacht charter industry for over 15 years – organizing sailing holidays for over 40,000 clients each year – with this increasing number of clients heading to the water each year, it’s important to raise awareness of ways in which we can preserve our ocean and its wildlife.

Clément Blanchard, GlobeSailor Booking Expert and member of Surfrider Foundation in La Rochelle, France, commented: “I’m very proud to be driving our environmental initiatives within the company. I’ve been part of the GlobeSailor team for almost 10 years and during this period I’ve noticed our colleagues and clients becoming more sensitive towards environmental issues and to actively seek ways to protect our sailing habitat. The partnership is a natural step for us to take, we are all passionate about our experiences on the ocean and we want to do whatever we can to help preserve our planet’s most precious resource – so that we can continue to offer amazing experiences to our clients and to the next generation of ‘GlobeSailors’.”

To find out more about Responsible Sailing, read GlobeSailor’s Blog article here.

GlobeSailor have pledged a €2 donation to Surfrider Foundation Europe for every confirmed booking over the next 12 month period, the estimated donation is said to be approximately €13,000 to 15,000€
