Mitek Electric motors

Making its debut at the Southampton Boat Show, Mitek’s range of electric motors offer a fascinating new take on electrified propulsion. In addition to some standard electric replacements for outboards, Mitek’s revolutionary Revolve sterndrive will also be showcased.  This is the only sterndrive on the market that is able to rotate on its own axis to switch from on to off mode, reducing its dimensions almost to zero. It’s an innovative and elegant solution to completely eliminate the problem of mounting, dismounting and storing traditional outboard motors. The innovative product will be showcased on Electric Outboard’s stand, FO27, by the entrance to Hall 1 of Ocean Hall at this year’s boat show.

Shore2Sea Dry Bag

Shore2Sea, set out on a mission to produce eye-catching, fun to use, top-quality dry bags writes Milly Karsten. The bag I tested had a capacity of 15 litres, affording me the luxury of taking everything I could possibly need on my salty, and often soaking, adventures. Shore2Sea’s range includes 5L, 15L and 20L dry bags, made from strong and durable PVC, and are available now for £22-£38. They also offer a 28L eco tow float with double chambers, which also comes as a rucksack. Happily, these are made from recycled plastic bottles.

Shore2Sea
Credit: Milly Karsten

I have been testing the 15L dry bag by Shore2Sea for the last five months, during which time it’s come with me dinghy sailing, out on the paddle board, and on many occasions walking down to the beach, on both sunny and (typically British) rainy days. It’s sat in the sun, fallen in the water (with me), and has been tethered to the mast of a Laser on particularly windy and capsizing days. After 5 months of various seaside and boaty activities, the material feels waxy-new, and the adjustable straps remain reassuringly comfortable. With these roll-top dry bags the seal at the top always seems the first to show signs of wear and tear, but my Shore2Sea bag still rolls and seals perfectly, with no suggestion of wearing in the creases of the roll. I’m impressed.

The Southampton International Boat Show 2024 is right around the corner and the excitement is building, even more so now that we’ve heard about the new boats on display… Here’s some top picks from our Editor Sam Jefferson.

New Boats: Our Editor’s 6 Top Picks

Moody DS48

Moody has been under German ownership as part of the Hanse group for many years now and offers a different sort of cruiser in quality deck saloon cruisers which are designed by Bill Dixon. The new 48 is the first new launch they have made since their 41 2020 and fits between the Moody 45 and 54 in their range. As you’d expect, this is a boat that is big on space and comfort, featuring a big, beamy hull with a single rudder. Performance has not been neglected, however, because she sports a generous rig to push her 21,000kg displacement through the water.

Dufour 44

French manufacturer Dufour has really pumped up the volume with its latest generation of yachts. The new Umberto Felci designed 44 follows on from the 37 and 41 which have already drawn plaudits thanks to their remarkable ability to create internal volume without looking overly dumpy. The 44 continues in this vein boasting plentiful beam aft and full sections at the bow above the waterline. The interior is positively palatial and there is a choice of three or four cabin layouts.

New Boats: Xc47

It has been some years since Danish manufacturers X Yachts realised that if they offered a de tuned Xc cruising range alongside its out and out performance yachts, it would massively enlarge its customer base. The project was a huge success and the Xc range is now into its second generation with the launch of the Xc47. The new launch is one of the first since X Yachts divorce from founder and chief designer Niels Jeppesen and the result is a yacht that leans heavily towards the cruising market, featuring something not far from a deck saloon. The hull lines feature plenty of beam aft and there has obviously been a very conscious effort to up the cruising ante. That said, the boat retains a powerful rig and weight has been kept reasonably modest.

Hanse 360

Hanse Yachts broke with go to designer of many years Judel/Vrolijk a couple of years back and this was the catalyst behind the launch of a new generation of Hanses designed by the French team of Berret/Racoupeau. In addition to a marked change in styling, with inverted ‘dreadnought bow and hard chines aft giving the boats a more angular look, the main drive seemed to be to up the quality of the boats down below – which was certainly achieved. The new Hanse 360 distils their recent models’ key design features and sleek profile into a yacht under 38′ in length.

New Boats: Saffier SE24 Lite

Netherlands based boatbuilder Saffier has made a point of producing fast, stylish dayboats/weekenders that are easy to handle but provide masses of thrills. THe SE24 Lite is one of the smaller boats in its range and features a Torqeedo 3.5 kW electric motor with the battery reservoirs boosted by solar panels. The true joy of the boat though is the sailing  With a single handed and the boat includes a large, ergonomic cockpit with a sundeck, two berthing places and enough storage space for your complete wardrobe.

Nautitech 48 Open

Nautitech was one of the first boatbuilders to bridge the gap between pure cruising catamarans and more sophisticated performance cruisers. They did this by giving their boats better feel on the helm, with the wheels situated outboard, and designing a hull form that had decent upwind performance while eschewing the costly addition of daggerboards. It has been a successful formula and the company has now launched its new flagship, the 48 which looks to continue in the same vein as older models, just on a slightly larger scale.

What to Expect at The Southampton Boat Show 2024

Something for everyone

This International Boat Show really is an event for all sailors and watersports lovers alike. The success of having zoned areas in previous years is to be repeated in 2024, with dedicated areas of different interests, so that you can easily find and the area of your core interest, before getting stuck into the wider show, wandering around in your own time. Similarly to last year, the show’s footprint in Southampton will stretch right into the heart of the city, making access and parking super convenient. Having such a large area has meant the show has, and will, accommodate all boating interests and far beyond.

Chandlery, Kit & Gear

In the days of the pandemic, clothing, kit and chandlery brands understandably steered clear of these events… but rest assured those days are over. Last year we saw the merchants return in full force, and with show offers popping up all over the place, it was the perfect day out for us bargain hunters. This year you can expect just as much excitement, safe in the knowledge that if you don’t go home with a new Benneteau or Jeanneau, you can certainly get your hands on a top quality foulie jacket, or new pair of sailing specific sunglasses.

Henri Lloyd, North Sails, Deck Shoe Shop, Hugo Boss sunglasses and Calvin Klein sunglasses, are just some of the exciting brands coming to the show this year.

The Watersports Zone

At the Southampton Boat Show 2024, the Watersports Zone will have hundreds of exhibitors, a trove of expert advice, brand new attractions, interactive opportunities and the chance to get afloat. Whether you’re searching for fitness tips, guidance on how to dip your toe into the watersports world, or in depth expert advice on how to improve technique, you’ll get to know exactly what’s hot right now.

And… this year, the Towergate Watersports Lake is boasting 30% more activity sessions than at the 2023 show! It’s the perfect place to try a wide array of exciting watersports activities, and thanks to Rockley Watersports, they’re free!

The Marina and New Yachts

The Show’s purpose-built marina, housing hundreds of berths, will be filled to the brim with hundreds of prestigious sailing and motor boats and outstanding tender and chase boats. From exploring high-end sailing yachts, catamarans, motorboats, ribs and speed boats, to getting expert advice on logistics for boat transportation, or boat design and refits, visiting the Marina is a must.

Are you a dreamer or a serious buyer? Either way, you’ll understand our excitement at the yachts that are on show this year…

  • Hanse 410
  • Dufour 44
  • Moody DS48
  • Hallberg-Rassy 44
  • Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

Along with many highly anticipated new yachts, this year, the Southampton Boat Show is hosting UK premiere of X-Yachts’ magnificent Xc47.

Dinghy Zone

Are you a leisurely dinghy sailor, or keen to get involved in the dinghy community and racing scene?

It’s not everyday you see sports and sailing dinghies, boat builders, cruisers, sailing clubs, trailer boats, holiday providers, high-performance equipment, and training options all in the same place, but at The Southampton Boat Show Dinghy Zone, they’ve got just that… Whether you’re a family of young dinghy sailors or looking for the latest cutting edge technology and designs, this zone of the show has something for everyone – any age, any ability. It’s also where you’ll find the chandlery of your dreams. Here, you can expect an unbeatable range of ropes, foils, sails, and other essential and specific supplies.

Classic & Dayboat Zone

Our sister title, Classic Boat Magazine, is proud to be the sponsor for the Classic & Day Boat Zone this year. This area of the show offers a haven of varnished wooden decks, coloured sails on gaff rigs, traditional brass fittings and shiny sleek hulls… it’s a space for you to immerse yourself in beautiful craftsmanship and learn about traditional techniques. From modern boats inspired by traditional designs and skills, to remarkably restored classics, this zone is a real treat for devoted classics lovers and budding enthusiasts.

You also won’t want to miss the live demonstrations in the Classic & Dayboat Zone. Throughout the show business professionals will be showcasing the craftsmanship and skill behind these beautiful maritime crafts, delving into the history and traditions of the tools, still used to this day. From knot masterclasses to monkey’s fist and rope fender workshops, the International Guild of Knot Tyers will have you covered… A wonderful opportunity to get stuck in and learn some traditional seaman skills. Don’t forget to say hello to our Classic Boat Team, they’ll be there!

Live Music and More…

It’s not all boats! You can expect some festival spirit, with live music, entertainment and guest speakers on the stages. It’s all about showcasing the boating lifestyle, and this year the show’s line-up is guaranteeing a buzzing atmosphere, with DJ legend Chris Moyles headlining, and the likes of Symphonic Ibiza and DJ Chris Arnold keeping the party going…

Want to visit the show but worried about missing the sport? The show will be live streaming the international cricket, Premier League, and America’s Cup Semi Finals, so that you can do both!

What can you see at the Southampton International Boat Show?

The event encompasses everything from the latest yachts and motorboats, some of which have their world premiere at the show, to historic classic vessels from the past, and personal watersports kit like kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

There’s a large portion of the show on land, covering Mayflower Park and stretching into the heart of the city, while there is also an area on the water, with purpose-built pontoons where you can wander among the best and most glamorous yachts on the market.

Meanwhile there is chandlery and nautical kit to buy – everything from 300hp outboard engine, to a shackle, to foulies, to deck shoes.

Can you see on board the boats?

You sure can. There are hundreds of yachts, multihulls, motorboats, RIBs, classic boats, dinghies and more on show. The show always has a good amount of world premieres, with exhibitors coming in from across the world to show their wares to the discerning British buyer. On rare occasions you need an appointment but most of the time if you ask the dealer they’ll be glad to let you see round the boats.

Can you go sailing at the show?

Yes, you certainly can! There are tons of opportunities to get afloat on yachts, dinghies, RIBs, motorboats, classic boats and more. Kids and parents can try their hand at various watersports activities like SUPs (paddleboards) or kayaks. Read more about how to get afloat at the show here.

Spirit Yachts, left, and RS Sailing, right, are both former winners of the show’s Environmental Award, presented by yachtsman and The Green Blue’s Mike Golding, far right

What is the show doing for the environment?

The marine industry worldwide is moving at a remarkable pace towards a sustainable future, with a vast number of new companies springing up offering ‘green’ ways to get afloat and means of making your existing sailing or motorboating ‘greener’.

Exhibitors for some years have been asked to sign up to a ‘green pledge’ which combats the use of single-use plastics on show stands and other measures aimed at reducing the show’s footprint. There is also an annual environmental award, given to an exhibitor.

Additionally exhibitors at this year’s show, who are bringing new environmentally innovative or sustainable products or services to the market, are being invited to submit it  for a new ‘environmental showcase’. A judging panel will decide which products or services appear in the showcase. Read more about the show’s new Environmental Showcase, and watch a video about the event’s ongoing sustainability drive, in our story here.

Is there a VIP visitor’s package?

Yes, visitors to this year’s Southampton International Boat Show can add a touch of luxury to their visit at the Quayside Club. There is a choice of three exclusive VIP packages, which include complimentary drinks and snacks for the duration of your visit, a gourmet buffet lunch overlooking the marina, VIP parking and access to the ‘On the Water’ stage private enclosure.

Read more about the Quayside Club here.

What dinghies are at the show?

There is a dedicated Dinghy Zone, with boats from RS and other big manufacturers, as well as dinghy sailing kit and clothing. The show’s website has a dedicated dinghy section. The Watersports Zone is packed with paddleboards and more.

Morgenster tall ship

What classic boats are at the show?

This year Classic Boat is sponsoring the Classic & Day Boat Zone, which traditionally has always been the wooden-boat heart of the show.  It’s one of the highlights of the show, whether you’re a wooden boat nut or not, occupied by the Wooden Boat Builders Trade Association and other practioners of traditional skills, where you can see clinker dinghies being built, other traditional craft ongoing and a variety of gorgeous wooden sail boats, canoes and other craft on show – and for sale!

Read more about classic boats at the show in our story here.

How accessible is the show?

There is a reduced admission price for visitors who are registered disabled and wheelchairs will be available for hire on the day from the show entrance, subject to availability (manual wheelchairs only). Visitors will need to go to a cashier on arrival at the show to request to hire. Availability cannot be guaranteed and a deposit will be required.

Dogs are permitted access into the show, however access onto the Marina will be restricted at busy times. No other animals will be admitted to the show.

The show has some bridges between zones, but there are also ground-level walkways and accessible gates, which you can use by getting a wristband when you enter the show at the box office.

There are disabled toilets on site. Disabled parking is available at the West Quay multi storey car-park.

The show has its own accessibiity page here.

Southampton Boat Show tickets and times

  • Don’t forget as a reader of one of our magazines, you can claim a reduced ticket price using the codes at the top of this page!

The Barton tech team will be exhibiting a large selection of their extensive deck equipment range at Southampton Boat Show 2022, including recent releases Skydock and the Stanchion Bullseye Lead Block.  Barton can be found on stand J316 in the Ocean Hall from the 16th to the 25th September alongside UK distributor Barrus.

With the first signs of autumn arriving and most boaters starting to think about winterizing and storing away more vulnerable bits of kit, Skydock is a must discover product at the show.  The Barton demo shows you how to safely and securely lift items such as sails, cushions, dinghies, lifejackets, life rafts, tenders, inflatable toys and much, much more, stored in previously unused storage space in your garage, outbuilding or loft over the winter months.  Up to 80kg can be easily lifted and stored out of the way.

With the option of a 3:1 and 4:1 purchase system, loads can be easily shifted straight from the roof of a car or from the ground by one person with little stress.  The unique Barton self-locking pulley block will take the strain and not allow lifted items to fall, even if the line is accidentally released.

The Barton SkyDock

All parts required for installation are included in the one box and easy to follow instructions, backed with a handy video guide available on the Barton YouTube Channel, enable Skydock to be ready for use in around an hour.  SkyDock really is the ultimate roof space storage solution.  Find out more about SkyDock here.

Also new in 2022, the Stanchion Bullseye Lead Block does what it says on the tin. Attaching to the base of stanchions, they secure furling lines out of the way on the rail, for smooth running and snag free operation. With no moving parts and minimal weight, the stainless steel fixing nuts enclose a clever two-part marine grade shell and a hard anodised surface on the eye, it is designed for a long service life afloat.  Simple to install with no holes required in the deck, they are the perfect upgrade for anyone with a furling headsail, jib or genoa.

The Stanchion Bullseye Lead Block

Hundreds of other products will be available for show and tell on the Barton display, so if you are thinking about upgrading or replacing any deck hardware ready for 2023 and looking for sleek looking, high quality, long lasting, but great value products, then visit Barton’s stand J316 at Southampton Boat Show.
